November 5, 2014 – Edmonton – Veterans Affairs Canada
The Honourable Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Centre, announced Government of Canada support for two local projects paying tribute to Canada’s brave men and women who have served in uniform. MP Hawn made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs.
The No Stone Left Alone Memorial Foundation will receive $5,000 for commemorative poppy-laying ceremonies. On November 6, hundreds of local school children will lay more than 10,000 poppies—in 20 cemeteries around Edmonton and Jasper. The day’s main event will be held at Beechmount Cemetery, with simultaneous events held at 19 other locations. These events can be viewed via live web feed on the No Stone Left Alone website.
The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires’ Northern Alberta Division will receive $2,500 for Edmonton’s annual Remembrance Day service. On November 11, Edmontonians will gather at the Butterdome to honour all Canadians who have served and continue to serve our country in times of war, conflict and peace. This years’ service will include marching contingents from Veterans’ groups, the Canadian Armed Forces and local policing services as well as youth from a variety of organizations, including Cadets Canada, Scouts Canada, and Girl Guides of Canada. More than 5,000 people are expected to attend the service, which will be televised live across Alberta.
