Minister Peter MacKay announces support for remembrance projects

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Regional Minister responsible for Nova Scotia, is pleased the Government of Canada will support seven Nova Scotia projects that pay tribute to Canada’s brave men and women who have served in uniform. Minister MacKay made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs.
The Main Street Dartmouth Business Improvement District Association received $2,500 for A Tribute to Veterans and Those who Serve parade and reception held on November 1 in Dartmouth. The event involved Veterans, scouts, guides, police, fire and emergency groups.
The Capital District Health Authority received $1,000 for the Veterans’ Services’ annual Candlelight Veterans Tribute. The touching candlelight ceremony will took place November 5 at Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building—home to Atlantic Canada’s largest Veteran population. The service paid tribute to Veterans with the placement of lit candles on the site’s cenotaph as a visible symbol of remembrance.
The Annual Remembrance Church Service Association received $1,125 for the annual Ecumenical Service of Remembrance at St. Agnes Church in Prospect Bay. Held on November 7, the event featured guest speakers, readings and war era music by the St. Agnes Choir and the Halifax Concert Band.
The Heatherbell Scottish Society received $2,500 for a November 9 presentation in Pictou, 50 Years of Remembrance. With performances by the Heatherbell Youth Pipe Band, a high school concert band, and a variety of local musicians, the event demonstrated how the efforts of local heroes have impacted and sustained pride in youth for half a century.
The Annie V. Johnson Chapter of the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.) will receive $955 for a Remembrance Day ceremony at the North Preston cenotaph. On November 11, residents will gather to recognize and honour the sacrifices of local Veteran heroes and still-serving Canadian Armed Forces members.
The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre will receive $5,000 for Stories of Our First Nations Veterans—Our Contributions and Our Legacy, a series of documentaries, designed to educate Canadians about First Nations’ involvement and contributions to our military heritage. Featuring previously untold stories by Canadian Aboriginal War Veterans from Nova Scotia and Ontario, the documentaries will be distributed to local schools, available online through a network of 119 Canadian Friendship Centre websites and streamed online through partner websites.
The Moser River Community Association will receive $1,307 through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program to assist with the restoration of the Moser River and Area Cenotaph. The monument, which is focal point for remembrance activities, commemorates those from the community who gave their lives as well as those who served during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.
