November 24, 2014 – Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec – Infrastructure Canada
The governments of Canada and Quebec today applaud the opening of an organic waste reclamation centre in the municipality of Saint-Hyacinthe. The centre will process the contents of brown bags collected by residents of Acton and Maskoutains MRCs as well as organic residue from local agri-food businesses.
The organic waste reclamation centre was established by the municipality of Saint-Hyacinthe as part of the second phase of its project to create facilities to process organic matter through biomethanization and composting.
Over the next year, the municipality will launch phase two of the biomethanization plant, which involves installing hydrolysers, additional digesters, pasteurization units and a biogas purification unit and carrying out related work. With these new facilities, Saint-Hyacinthe will be able to increase its capacity to process organic waste and produce more biogas.
"Our government recognizes the importance of supporting green infrastructure projects that benefit both the economy and the environment, while promoting cleaner, greener living. In addition to the construction of the organic waste reclamation centre, the installation of additional facilities for Saint-Hyacinthe's biomethanization plant will create jobs, protect the environment and provide more economic opportunities."
- The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec
"It is a pleasure to participate today in the inauguration of Saint-Hyacinthe's innovative project which will actively help fight climate change. Once complete, the centre will keep 100,000 wet tonnes of organic waste out of landfills and eliminate more than 15,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year. Thanks to green facilities, organic residue can now be transformed into compost or biogas, thereby supporting economic renewal. This project proves that, working together, we can move forward so that our children can grow up in a lean and green society."
