Modification: location of the appearance at the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Development
November 17, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today announced that a delegation from the organization Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage, headed by Her Royal Highness Princess Mabel van Oranje, will visit Canada from November 17 to 21, 2014. The delegation will visit Ottawa, Toronto and Montréal. Girls Not Brides is a global partnership of more than 400 civil society organizations from over 60 countries working to address child marriage and enable girls to fulfill their potential.
“I am so pleased that a delegation from Girls Not Brides will visit Canada to speak about the importance of ending child, early and forced marriage around the world,” said Baird. “Canada has made it a priority to speak up for these young girls, and we are proud to partner with organizations that seek to build them a better future.”
During their visit to Ottawa, the delegation will meet with high-level government officials and parliamentarians, including at the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Development, to discuss the important issue of child, early and forced marriage.
They will also join Baird for a special ceremony and announcement at the headquarters of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada.
During their visit, they will also meet with non-governmental organizations, officials and young people to highlight the need for a concerted effort in combatting the practice of child, early and forced marriage.
