The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of October 2014 highlights from the border crossings in southern Alberta. This sampling underscores the CBSA’s commitment to keeping communities safe and ensuring our laws are respected.
On October 2, a U.S. resident with multiple driving while under the influence offences was denied entry at Carway, Alberta. Background checks revealed the man had a suspended driver’s license. CBSA officers escorted him back to the U.S.
Two currency seizures were made at Coutts. On October 5, a British Columbia man failed to declare $20,242 in currency concealed in a backpack. On October 10, an Edmonton man failed to declare $21,055 concealed in three different places inside his vehicle. The currency was returned to each of the travellers upon payment of a $250 penalty.
On October 8, two NEXUS members had their privileges revoked at Coutts after attempting to smuggle a pair of designer watches valued at $21,000. They were issued a $6,340 penalty. Had they been truthful, they would have paid $1,050 in goods and services tax and would have retained their Trusted Traveller status.
On October 8, officers seized an undeclared restricted semi-automatic rifle and 16 over-capacity magazines from a U.S. resident en route to Alaska. The man was issued a $1,500 penalty, and the rifle and magazines will be destroyed. The man was allowed entry to continue his journey to Alaska.
On October 18, an Alberta man arrived at Coutts driving a vehicle. He was referred inside to pay duties and taxes on goods purchased when officers immediately noted signs of impairment. The man failed the roadside screening test and was arrested for impaired driving. He was turned over to Milk River Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
In Del Bonita on October 18, an Alberta man returning from Montana was arrested on an outstanding warrant and was turned over to Raymond RCMP.

- There were 13,307 commercial trucks and 32,555 shipments at Coutts.
- Officers completed 343 permanent resident landings and issued 105 work permits and 11 study permits at Coutts.
- Officers completed 235 permanent resident landings and issued 31 work permits and eight study permits at Carway.
- Officers refused entry to 40 foreign nationals at Coutts and to 17 foreign nationals at Carway for criminality and other reasons.
