The Honourable Denis Lebel announces support for commemorative projects

The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for Quebec, today announced Government of Canada support for six projects paying tribute to Canada’s brave men and women who have served in uniform. Minister Lebel made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs.
The Town of Hampstead received $2,200 for a remembrance ceremony held on November 6 at the Cenotaph and Holocaust Memorial in Hampstead Park. During the ceremony, local students walked in a parade with Veterans and Holocaust survivors, before participating in a ceremony that included poetry readings and a wreath and plaque display. This event was organized by the Town of Hampstead in collaboration with the Royal Montreal Regiment and five Hampstead schools.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 209 received $2,500 for the play Chroniques d’un soldat inconnu au Saguenay pour le centième de la guerre 1914-1918. The 20-minute interactive play focused on the daily life of a Canadian soldier in the trenches during the First World War. The play was staged at various locations in Quebec from November 2 to 7.
The Dawson College received $2,500 for the Recognizes Veterans’ Contributions to Peace ceremony on November 10 in Westmount. The day began with breakfast followed by a ceremony at the campus Peace Garden which included a presentation to family members of First World War Veterans and finished with a symbolic release of doves.
The Last Post Fund will receive $2,500 for their annual Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11 at the National Field of Honour in Pointe-Claire. This traditional ceremony will include a wreath-laying, gun salute and the playing of the Last Post, the Lament and Rouse as well as the reading of In Flanders Fields.
The Municipality of Bolton-Est will receive $2,500 for commemorative activities taking place November 7 to 11. This year, the Municipality’s remembrance programming will include an exhibit of war memorabilia, a theatrical production and a Remembrance Day commemorative mass and celebration at St. Patrick’s Anglican Church.
Heritage Lower Saint Lawrence will receive $5,000 for the project In the Light of Remembrance: Canadian Pride. Through this unique project, 27 high school students from the Métis Beach School will participate in the Canadian War Museum’s launch of the films War Correspondence 1914-1918: Ever Your Loving Son and War Correspondence 1939-1945. Both films were shot by a local film company and feature Veterans and high school students from the participating students’ community, Métis-sur-Mer. After viewing the films and visiting the Canadian War Museum, students will create their own commemorative content for presentation during Remembrance Day activities.
