An international jury has chosen the 12 winners of Interactive Haiku―a call for submissions for short online interactive experiences from the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and ARTE. The winners were announced November 23 at the IDFA DocLab Interactive Conference in Amsterdam.
Interactive Haiku challenges applicants to create surprising, stirring and thought-provoking short interactive projects that bring the brevity and richness of the haiku to the online realm.
Projects will launch in spring 2015.
The winning proposals are:
• Speech Success (Spain) – Created by Roc Albalat, Pau Artigas, Jorge Caballero and Marcel Pié.
• Le marcheur de saison (France) – Artistic direction and interactive design by Théo Le Du Fuentes a.k.a. Cosmografik. Produced by Arnaud Colinart/Ex Nihilo.
• Cat's Cradle (Canada) – Written by Thibaut Duverneix and David Drury, and directed by Thibaut Duverneix. Sound design by David Drury. Developed by Jean-Maxime Couillard and produced by Gentilhomme.
• Yogaraca (Japan) – Directed by Yuichi Minamiguchi. Sound design by Ayumi Yoshioka. Web programming by Jun Nakawatari, with Masahiko Otake as poet/supervisor.
• Facing the Nameless (United States) – Created by Ziv Schneider at Specular Projects.
• Log-in (France) – Created by Pierre Jullian de la Fuente.
• Music in the Key of Life (Sweden) – Created by Theodor Twetman and Viktor Lanneld.
• Phi (France) – Original idea and design by Charles Ayats. Developer is Mathias Desloges. Sound design by Colleen. Produced by Marie Blondiaux/Red Corner.
• Z... Discover the Space Beyond – (France) Artist/developer is Cyril Diagne, with Béatrice Lartigue as designer and artistic director (Lab212). Music by Chapelier Fou (Ici, d'ailleurs...).
• Datum (Canada) – Programming by Ben Swinden. Animation by Hamish Lambert.
• Life Is short – (France) Created by Florian Veltman. Sound design by Baptiste Portefaix.
• Grand bruit (Canada) – Collectif Grand bruit consists of Étienne Desprès (programming), Marc Larivière (illustration and animation), Martin Rodriguez (music and soundscape) and Simon Emmanuel Roux (production).
• Memes, Vines and Buzzfeed are all formatted for the digital age, where users tend to consume things quickly. Yet brief experiences aren't synonymous with an absence of quality or depth: the short format of haiku poetry offers a perfect example. Interactive Haiku aims to bring the brevity and richness of the haiku to the online realm, through projects that explore the possibilities of the short interactive format.
• First announced in June, the deadline for applications for Interactive Haiku was August 19, 2014.
• Proposals were selected by an international jury consisting of Caspar Sonnen, founder and curator, IDFA DocLab; Héctor Ayuso, founder and programmer, OFFF Festival; David Carzon, bi-media editor-in-chief, Telerama; Ciel Hunter, creative director, the Creators Project; Jonathan Harris, artist and computer scientist; Marie-Pier Gauthier, head of production at the NFB's Digital Studio; and Alexander Knetig, web commissioning editor at ARTE. William Uricchio, professor of Comparative Media Studies and Principal Investigator of the MIT Open Documentary Lab and the MIT Game Lab, will serve as jury president.
• IDFA Doclab is a showcase for new media held annually as part of International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.
