The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today announced additional funding to address the urgent humanitarian needs of those living in areas affected by Typhoon Hagupit, which hit the Philippines on December 6, 2014.
The $5 million in additional humanitarian assistance will be allocated to the following humanitarian organizations.
Canada’s support will help address the immediate needs of 15,000 typhoon-affected people by:
- providing temporary shelters for 1,000 families;
- providing small cash grants to 1,000 women to restart livelihoods, including raising livestock;
- providing small cash grants to affected workers in the farming and fishing sectors to restart lost livelihoods; and
- developing community disaster plans to mitigate the effects of future disasters.
Canada’s support will help address the immediate needs of 100,000 typhoon-affected people by:
- providing water purification and hygiene kits to 20,000 families;
- repairing 600 household latrines;
- delivering hygiene promotion training to prevent water-borne illness;
- installing/rehabilitating community water-storage units and infrastructure;
- providing livelihood-specific assets, such as seeds and tools, to 4,000 families;
- supporting the completion of general repairs and debris cleanup in affected communities through Cash-for-Work (CFW) activities; and
- addressing immediate needs of affected families through small cash grants to cover the costs of food and other basic items.
Canada’s support will help address the immediate needs of 16,000 typhoon-affected people by:
- providing temporary shelter supplies and household items to 3,200 families;
- distributing hygiene kits to 3,200 families;
- delivering water purification tablets and jerry cans to 3,200 families; and
- supporting completion of community repairs and cleanup and providing temporary livelihood support to 3,200 families through CFW activities and small cash grants.
Canada’s support will help address the immediate needs of 12,000 typhoon-affected people by:
- providing emergency shelter repair kits and small cash grants to 1,200 households to help with the cost of household repairs;
- distributing water purification tablets and hygiene kits to 1,200 households; and
- providing training in health and hygiene practices to community volunteers aimed at promoting hygiene awareness in affected communities.
Canada’s support will help address the immediate needs of 10,000 typhoon-affected people by:
- distributing hygiene kits and water purification units to 2,000 families; and
- supporting activities that promote clean water, sanitation and hygiene in affected communities.
Canada’s support will help address the immediate needs of 11,500 typhoon-affected people by:
- providing tarps and shelter tool kits to 2,300 households;
- distributing hygiene and water kits to 2,300 households; and
- promoting good hygiene practices in affected communities.
Canada’s support will help address the immediate needs of 8,100 typhoon-affected people by:
- providing shelter kits, food baskets, household and hygiene kits and seeds to re-establish lost livelihoods in the agricultural sector.
