Ottawa—On behalf of His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, Her Honour the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will present the insignia of Member of the Order of Canada to Gaétan Gervais, during a ceremony at Greater Sudbury City Hall, in Ontario, on Friday, December 5, 2014, at 11 a.m. Mr. Gervais was appointed on May 2, 2013.

A citizen who is actively involved in his community and able to instill pride in others, Gaétan Gervais is a builder of French Ontario. A former professor at Laurentian University, he pioneered Franco-Ontarian studies and published seminal works on the history and contributions of Francophones. He also strengthened the anchor of Franco-Ontarian identity as the instigator and co-creator of its flag, and is responsible for founding organizations dedicated to researching French Ontario, including the Institut Franco-Ontarien and the Société Charlevoix. Moreover, he helped to promote the use of French within the academic community and advance the language in his province as the chair of the Franco-Ontarian Education and Training Council.
