The governments of Canada and Quebec confirm $6 million in funding to develop the water infrastructure profile of Quebec municipalities

Building Canada Fund; Research and Planning component

December 17, 2014 – Montréal, Quebec – Infrastructure Canada

The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Pierre Moreau, Minister of the Quebec Department of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, are proud to confirm $6 million in funding for the Centre for Expertise and Research on Infrastructure in Urban Areas (CERIU) to chart municipal water infrastructure.

This financial support is being provided through the Research and Planning component of the federal Building Canada Fund and the Government of Quebec's contribution. The Research and Planning component supports third-party research projects on municipal infrastructure such as city roads, engineering works, underground and climate change infrastructure, urban technical networks, information technology, and asset management.

Quick facts

The governments of Canada and Quebec provide an equal share of the funding, which will be used to improve knowledge of and observe changes in the condition of municipal water infrastructure.
Targeted research categories are wastewater and drinking-water supplies, treatment, and distribution networks, and combined storm-water and sanitary sewer systems.
The project will provide municipalities with better tools for planning their investment needs in the short, medium and long terms.
Knowledge of infrastructure conditions will help both levels of government develop financial assistance programming that more effectively meets municipalities' needs.
