Harper Government Investment Supports Tourism Development in Northern Ontario

December 16, 2014 – Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario – Industry Canada/FedNor

Member of Parliament Bryan Hayes (Sault Ste. Marie), on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), announced today an investment to support the growth and diversification of Northern Ontario's tourism industry.

The investment of $214,500 will support four initiatives to help enhance tourism products and services across Northern Ontario, which in turn will attract more visitors for longer stays in the region, helping to create jobs and strengthen the economy (see information sheet for details).

Quick facts

According to Statistics Canada, tourism represents approximately $2 billion in revenue for Northern Ontario, with nature-based tourism and angling attracting most of the visitors to the region.
The funding announced today is provided through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
Since 2006, through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, the Harper Government has invested $329 million in support of more than 1,600 projects. These investments have supported more than 21,500 jobs throughout Northern Ontario.
