Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Raymond P. Whalen, a Judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador since 2008, Trial Division, has been appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Trial Division. He replaces Justice D.B. Orsborn.
Justice Raymond P. Whalen received a Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and a Bachelor of Education in 1973, both from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of New Brunswick in 1979, and was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in 1979. Mainly practicing in the fields of corporate law, commercial law and civil litigation, Justice Whalen practiced most of his career as Associate and later as Partner with White Ottenheimer and Baker. He served as Executive Vice-President and in-house counsel, and then President and General Legal Counsel with Guigné International Ltd. from 2000 to 2005. He lectured at the Bar Admission course (wills and trusts, civil litigation), at the College of the North Atlantic, and taught real estate and business law at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
