Previous deportee jailed for illegal entry near Emerson
On December 12, Xandros Efren Zelaya Fuentes pled guilty to one count under to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) for returning to Canada without authorization and was sentenced to 30 days in jail by a Winnipeg provincial court judge.
Zelaya Fuentes entered Canada illegally on December 1, 2014 near the port of Emerson and was quickly apprehended by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He was turned over to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) where he was arrested and charged.
Quick Facts
- Zelaya Fuentes was previously removed to Honduras by the CBSA in July 2012 for being a member of an organized crime group, the Mara Salvatrucha 13 (MS-13).
- The CBSA is responsible for investigating cases of alleged contravention of the IRPA, including those who are suspected members of an organized crime group, and apprehending foreign nationals who are in violation of Canada’s laws.
- The CBSA will prosecute when there is sufficient evidence to support convictions for violations of the IRPA.
