January 30, 2015 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement regarding recent developments in Yemen:
“It has been over a week since the coup in Yemen, and I remain deeply concerned that the security situation in the country continues to deteriorate, with no progress toward a peaceful resolution or political transition. This comes as the Yemeni people are facing a severe humanitarian crisis.
“Canada calls on all sides to refrain from violence and to work with Jamal Benomar, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Yemen, to stabilize and legitimize the political situation.
“Canada also demands that all members of the government be freed from detention immediately.
“Canada stands by the Yemeni people during this difficult time, as they work toward creating a better and more peaceful future.”
