January 30, 2015 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“I was deeply disturbed by the terrorist attack against a Shia place of worship in Pakistan today that claimed the lives of at least 50 people and left more than 50 injured.
“Canada unequivocally condemns all acts of terrorism. Attacking a congregation that is peacefully assembling to express its faith is a shocking act and an attack on religious freedom.
“The timing of this attack, so soon after the heinous Peshawar school massacre and a similar attack against the Shia community in Rawalpindi on January 9, underscores the grave terrorist threat and the deadly menace of religious intolerance in Pakistan. Continued, determined action against all terrorist groups that prey on innocents and those of different faiths remains essential.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my condolences to the families and friends of those killed in this attack and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”
