January 21, 2015 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement concerning the announcement of a ceasefire in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa:
“Canada welcomes news of a ceasefire to the current hostilities but remains concerned by the increasing violence in Yemen. We call for the full and immediate implementation of the Peace and National Partnership Agreement by all parties. The current situation can be resolved only by restoring full control of government institutions to Yemen’s legitimate authorities.
“Canada believes that a democratic and peaceful transition in Yemen is essential in a time of regional instability and uncertainty, and it calls on all parties to implement recommendations of Yemen’s National Dialogue Conference.
“Canada supports the efforts of the United Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council to broker political dialogue and facilitate democratic transition in Yemen.”
