Government of Canada helps enhance capacity of Corner Brook to host national and international events
January 22, 2015 – Corner Brook, NL – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)
The 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships will be held in the City of Corner Brook, thanks in part to funding from the Government of Canada. The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), today announced $98,000 for the Corner Brook 2015 National Junior Curling Host Society Inc. to upgrade community infrastructure, acquire equipment and undertake marketing activities to successfully host the event.
The 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships, taking place from January 24 – February 1 at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, is a premiere event in the Canadian Curling Association's 'Season of Champions' series, which also includes the Tim Horton's Brier and the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, among other national and international championships. The championships combine the men's and women's national championships into one showcase, and the winners will then go on to represent Canada at the World Championships. The event includes 14 men's and 14 women's teams, representing each of the 10 provinces, Northern Ontario, the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut.
This will be the first time that Newfoundland and Labrador has hosted the Canadian Juniors since 1985. The Corner Brook Civic Centre and the Corner Brook Curling Club will co-host the event, with the finals being played at the Corner Brook Civic Centre. Funding from the Government of Canada, through ACOA, will also help increase Corner Brook’s capacity to host future national and international events.
