January 9, 2015 - The Honourable Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and for International Human Rights, along with a Canadian delegation that includes the Honourable Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, and the Honourable Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, is in India from January 5 to 13, 2015, to attend the Vibrant Gujarat Summit.
“The Vibrant Gujarat Summit is an opportunity for Canada to showcase Canadian commercial strengths in India, promote Canada as an investment destination of choice and provide a platform for Canadian businesses to take advantage of trade and investment opportunities,” said Parliamentary Secretary Obhrai.
In India, Mr. Obhrai is attending the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas event and awards ceremony, hosted annually by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs to mark the contribution of overseas Indian communities to the development of India. Mr. Obhrai received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award in 2009 for his contribution in strengthening Canada-India relations.
“I am honoured to attend the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas ceremony on behalf of Canada,” said Mr. Obhrai. “Canada and India have a relationship based on long-standing people-to-people ties, shared values of democracy and pluralism, and a mutual interest in expanding trade.”
Following his visit to India, Mr. Obhrai will travel to Nepal, where he will meet with Nepalese senior government representatives and business officials and mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Nepal.
