January 7, 2015 - I want to first begin by echoing what the Prime Minister said this morning about today’s tragic attacks in Paris. We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed today.
Canada condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms. We are hopeful that those behind it will be found quickly and brought to justice. There is no place in this world for such gratuitous attacks against innocent people.
My colleague and I just finished meeting with representatives of affected communities to talk about the crises in Syria and Iraq.
Since early 2014 the terror group ISIL has been carrying out a murderous rampage across Syria and Iraq.
They have been systematically killing anyone who does not adhere to their distorted version of Islam.
Attacks on Muslims, Christians or members of any religious community seeking to practice their faith in peace are completely unacceptable.
Canada will continue to be an outspoken ally of freedom around the world.
As we all know, the conflicts in Iraq and Syria have affected millions of people and pose a serious threat to stability and security in the Middle East.
Today, I am announcing additional humanitarian assistance in those countries.
This support will provide shelter, food and water, as well as protection for women and girls against sexual violence.
Canadians embrace the role we play to alleviate the suffering of those affected by conflict.
It is a responsibility that our government values.
