The Harper Government has signed an agreement with the Upper Fraser Fisheries Conservation Alliance (UFFCA) to provide initial support of $25,500 for a fish habitat restoration project in the Upper Fraser Watershed.
The work will be conducted in partnership with three First Nations groups — the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council, Tl'azt'en and Lheidli T'enneh.
The goal of this project is to improve habitat for the coho, chinook and sockeye salmon and white sturgeon populations along the river corridors.
To ensure coordination with other projects in this area, the UFFCA will work with the Nechako Environmental Enhancement Fund, the Provincial Environmental Stewardship Initiative and the University of Northern British Columbia’s Nechako Watershed Research Initiative.
This project will be funded through the Strategic Partnerships Initiative — West Coast Energy program, which aims to increase Aboriginal participation in economic opportunities in the natural resource sectors.
Since its creation in 2010, the Strategic Partnerships Initiative has supported over 400 Aboriginal communities, developed over 100 new partnerships and leveraged nearly $100 million in additional funding from other sources.
