Douglas George Phillips was born in Toronto, Ontario, and was educated in Whitehorse, Yukon. He was first appointed Commissioner of Yukon on November 30, 2010.
Mr. Phillips was elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in 1985 and served in a number of portfolios in Cabinet, including Minister of Tourism, Education, Justice and as Minister responsible for the Women's Directorate. He fulfilled the position of Government House Leader from 1992 to 1996, and Official Opposition House Leader from 1996 to 2000.
He was also actively involved in the community, serving as director of the Yukon Hospital Foundation and working on wildlife conservation projects. Before he was appointed Commissioner, he served as Yukon Administrator.
