The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing more than $2.8 million for two projects that will support tourism development in the NWT. The following projects are receiving funding from CanNor.
Tourism Marketing Plan Implementation
CanNor: up to $1.4 million (over two years)
GNWT: $5.749 (over two years)
Industry Partners: $210,000 (over two years)
NWT Tourism: $10,000 (over two years)
Total: $7.369 million
This funding will support the implementation of a two-year marketing plan building on previous work to promote the Northwest Territories to target markets in Asia, Europe and North America. Funding will support targeted marketing activities, including advertising and promotions, attendance at trade shows, market research and the development of a five-year marketing strategy. The overall goal of these activities is to increase the number of tourists visiting and spending money in the NWT.
Tourism Research and Product Development
CanNor: $1.407 million (over two years)
GNWT, ITI: $1.407 million (over two years)
Total: $2.815 million
This initiative will include tourism research, development of a visitor exit survey, community tourism development and training activities with an emphasis on five communities with emerging tourism opportunities: Fort Resolution, Lutsel K'e, Fort Simpson, Deline and Tuktoyaktuk. These efforts will aim to provide communities with the tools needed to develop and sustain tourism. Funding will also support baseline research to measure the impacts of these investments, as well a series of initiatives to build community tourism capacity.
Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED)
Investment in this project is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity-building across the North. SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor.
CanNor works to help develop a diversified, sustainable and dynamic economy across Canada's three territories, and delivers on its northern mandate through funding programs, the Northern Projects Management Office and by undertaking policy and research.
