February 13, 2015 – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – Western Economic Diversification Canada
Aboriginal people interested in careers in the trades in Saskatchewan will benefit from increased apprenticeship opportunities thanks to a $3.1 million investment announced today by Kelly Block, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
The Government of Canada’s support of Gabriel Dumont Institute Training & Employment (GDIT&E) will help train 150 new Aboriginal apprentices in trades experiencing a shortage of skilled workers, as identified by local industry and the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission. These trades include boilermakers, bricklayers, construction craft labourers, ironworkers, machinists, automotive technicians, power line technicians, electricians, plumbers and others.
Apprenticeships will provide Aboriginal people with valuable on-the-job experience to help bridge the gap between skills training and steady employment. In addition to providing the skilled workers needed by employers across Saskatchewan, this investment will also help Aboriginal students find employment within their communities.
