Ottawa, February 03, 2015 – Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made this statement following an arrest, by the RCMP's Ottawa Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), on terrorism-related offences.
“I commend the RCMP, CSIS and other law enforcement and national security partners for their tireless work and collaboration in keeping Canada safe from the ongoing global terror threat. Their diligence and dedication serve to protect Canadians from those who wish to cause harm and threaten our freedom.
Our Government is confronting the terrorist threat at home and has introduced the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015 to give our law enforcement and national security agencies the tools they need to protect Canadians against these ever-evolving threats.
As these matters are now before the courts, it would be inappropriate for me to comment any further.”
Awso Peshdary of Ottawa has been arrested and charged with multiple terrorism-related offences. John Maguire and Khadar Khalib have also been charged in absentia with participation in an activity of a terrorist group.
