February 14, 2015 - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“Canada is gravely concerned by Human Rights Watch reports of systematic and widespread rape in North Darfur.
“Canada will continue to stand up for the human rights and protection of women and girls in armed conflict. The Government of Canada calls on the Government of Sudan to grant the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur [UNAMID], humanitarian agencies, and human rights organizations unfettered access to Tabit to further investigate those reports and to assist in bringing support to victims.
“Widespread and persistent rape of women and girls reported in North Darfur is barbaric. The perpetrators and those in command must be held accountable for these heinous crimes.
“Sexual violence against women and girls has a devastating impact on the victims and their communities and is a barrier to peace and security.”
