February 27, 2015 - The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular), today announced that she will attend the inauguration of Tabaré Vázquez as president of Uruguay on March 1, 2015.
“On behalf of Canada, I would like to congratulate the new president-elect, Tabaré Vázquez,” said Minister Yelich. “Our close partnership with Uruguay is built on shared values of human rights, democracy and education and continues to be of fundamental importance to Canada. We look forward to working with president-elect Vázquez to further strengthen our economic relations and social ties.”
During her visit, Minister Yelich will meet with president-elect Tabaré Vázquez; Rodolfo Nin Novoa, Uruguay’s minister-designate of foreign affairs; Carolina Cosse, minister-designate of industry, energy and mining; and Canadian business representatives. Uruguay is identified as an emerging priority market in the Americas under Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan.
“Canada and Uruguay share a growing and multi-faceted relationship,” said Minister Yelich. “I look forward to meeting with Uruguayan officials to discuss ways in which we can continue to work together to strengthen security, prosperity and democracy in the Americas.”
While in Uruguay, Minister Yelich will visit the International Development Research Centre’s regional office for Latin America and the Caribbean, where she will meet with representatives to discuss Canada’s engagement in the region.
