February 4, 2015 – Montreal, National Film Board of Canada
The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) will be at the 33rd Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois (RVCQ), taking place February 19 to 28, 2015, with 21 films an an interactive project—a diverse selection of strong auteur works. Topping the list are two world premieres: Claude Cloutier’s animated short Autos Portraits/Carface (NFB), which opens the festival; and Jean-Claude Labrecque’s documentary Sur les traces de Maria Chapdelaine/Remembering Maria Chapdelaine (NFB). Sophie Deraspe, whose fiction feature Les loups will also open the RVCQ, will present the Canadian premiere of her documentary Le profil Amina/The Amina Profile (esperamos/NFB). The NFB is also bringing an immersive interactive experience to the Rendez-vous Pro and will take part in two panels, in addition to awarding the the Best Fiction Short Film Award. All NFB films will screen in French.
Presented as the opening film and making its world premiere, Claude Cloutier’s animated short Carface is a riotous musical comedy starring a 1957 Chevy Bel Air that, to the strains of “Que Sera Sera,” joins a dizzying waltz of freewheeling vehicles bent on having a smashing time—literally. The ultimate spectacle for our oil-dependent civilization, Cloutier’s short is an uproarious, sumptuous festival of destruction that looks as if Busby Berkeley and Mel Brooks were asked to co-direct the apocalypse. Produced at the NFB by Julie Roy.
Also making its world premiere, the latest documentary by the great Jean-Claude Labrecque, Remembering Maria Chapdelaine, retraces the astounding cinematic undertaking of French director Julien Duvivier, who arrived in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec in 1934 to shoot a film adaptation of Louis Hémon’s famous novel. How did the shooting of Duvivier’s film impact the community? What memories remain? What town secrets lie hidden in those memories? Produced at the NFB by Colette Loumède.
After premiering at Sundance, Sophie Deraspe’s feature documentary The Amina Profile screens in Canada for the first time at the RVCQ. The film chronicles how a love story between two women turned into an international socio-political thriller, spotlighting media excesses and the thin line between truth and falsehood in the age of the Internet. Produced by Isabelle Couture (esperamos) and Nathalie Cloutier (NFB). The executive producers are Hugo Latulippe, Michel St-Cyr and Guy Villeneuve (esperamos) and Colette Loumède (NFB). The Amina Profile is distributed in Canada by Les Films du 3 mars.
The RVCQ also offers audiences a chance to watch—on the big screen and with many filmmakers in attendance—a rich selection of animations and documentaries produced or co-produced by the NFB. Award winners in large part, these films have screened at top national and international festivals over the past year. Also, a new NFB interactive experience, Jusqu’ici/Way to Go (France Télévisions/NFB) by Vincent Morisset, will be on the Rendez-vous Pro program.
