Prime Minister Stephen Harper chats with Alain-Jacques Simard, CEO of TeraXion Inc., during a pre-budget consultation with members of Canada’s manufacturing industry.

Charlesbourg, Quebec - 13 February 2015

Introduction

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today participated in a pre-budget consultation in Charlesbourg, Quebec, with members of Canada’s manufacturing industry. He was joined by Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec.

The Prime Minister’s pre-budget consultation complements those hosted across the country by Joe Oliver, Minister of Finance, Kevin Sorenson, Minister of State (Finance), and Andrew Saxton, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, on the upcoming federal budget. In addition, Canadians are invited to submit their views online regarding how the Government can continue to build on the Economic Action Plan to further support families, encourage job creation, and secure a strong economy for today and the future.

Pre-budget consultations, including telepresence and online consultations, are part of the annual federal budget cycle to gather the views of Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
Manufacturers and processors are major contributors to the Canadian economy, both in terms of output and employment. These companies employ approximately 1.7 million Canadians and account for more than 10 per cent of our country’s gross domestic product (GDP). In Quebec alone, it is estimated that manufacturing employs about 490,000 people and accounts for 14 per cent of the province’s GDP.
Since 2006, the Government has taken significant steps to help Canadian manufacturers succeed, including reducing the corporate tax rate (Canada’s overall tax rate on new business investment is now the lowest in the G-7), supporting business innovation and technology, improving access to financing, and promoting international trade, including through the conclusion of free trade negotiations with both the European Union and the Republic of Korea.
