February 27, 2015 – Québec – The National Battlefields Commission
For this year’s March break, The National Battlefields Commission has put together a week jam-packed with free and affordable activities on the Plains of Abraham, and the fun starts on February 28. With the Snowshoer Family Outing, foot rally, plus cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and skating, there’s something for the whole family!
Highlights
- The Snowshoer Family Outing
Relive the winters of yesteryear with a heart-pumping snowshoe outing on the Plains of Abraham. Don your tuque, mittens, arrow sash, and traditional snowshoes and learn about the work that got our ancestors through the long winter months, identify animal tracks, and relax over a nice cup of hot chocolate as your guide takes you on a narrative journey. March 2–6, 2 p.m. Only in French. Tour starts at the Plains of Abraham Museum. Reservations required ($).
Lace up your walking shoes and discover the history of the Plains of Abraham in a family foot rally. Beneath the blanket of snow covering the park hidden secrets are waiting to be uncovered, and to spice things up a little, a few trivia questions… What was the role of the governor who donated the Canadian Football League’s famous cup? Who was Edwin Bélanger? Is there really a haunted labyrinth in the Martello towers? Who was the Gilmour behind Gilmour Hill? Set off to explore your park and its history. Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Starts at the Plains of Abraham Museum. Q&A forms available onsite or online. Free.
- Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and skating
Take in the best of the outdoors in the heart of Québec. Go skiing, snowshoeing, or ice skating in a setting that is utterly breathtaking yet infinitely convenient. Enjoy over 11 km of groomed beginner and intermediate cross-country and skate ski trails, 5.6 km of winter walking trails, and a 3.8 km (round trip) marked snowshoe trail located south of the Nature Trail, along Cape Diamond all the way to Gilmour Hill (starts near the Cap Blanc stairway). On the sports field, the Plains of Abraham Ice Rink is open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Refreshments are available at the skaters’ chalet—also a great place to warm up! Closed occasionally for special events and maintenance. Free.
Les amis des plaines d'Abraham operate a cross-country ski and snowshoe equipment rental service at the Plains of Abraham Museum. Trail maps are available at various service points in the park. A waxing room (at the sports field) and two heated shelters are also available (at the Plains of Abraham Museum and the Pavilion near the Edwin-Bélanger Bandstand).
