OTTAWA — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of National Defence, today issued the following statement:
“I would like to congratulate and welcome the new United States Secretary of Defense, Dr. Ashton Carter. Defence and security relations between our two countries are longstanding, well-entrenched and highly successful. As a new defence minister myself, I look forward to building upon this strong partnership with Secretary Carter as the U.S. and Canada work together to defend North America and to face the challenges of the current security environment, including countering the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in Iraq and Russian aggression in Ukraine.
“I would also like to thank the outgoing Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, on behalf of the Government of Canada. Canada and U.S. defence relations were strengthened and advanced on a range of issues during his tenure, and we wish him well in his future endeavours.”
