Today’s announcement of $140,000 is supporting emergency relief efforts under way by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to meet the immediate critical needs of up to 60,000 affected people (10,000 households) in Vanuatu. These efforts include providing:
- emergency relief items, including blankets, kitchen sets and hygiene items;
- shelter;
- health and hygiene promotion;
- clean water and sanitation; and
- assistance in restoring family links.
This contribution is in addition to the $20,000 already provided to the IFRC on Saturday, March 14, in support of its initial Disaster Relief Emergency Fund, bringing Canada’s total contribution to date to $160,000 in response to Cyclone Pam.
Canada helps save lives, alleviate suffering and maintain the dignity of people affected by conflict, natural disasters and situations of food insecurity requiring a humanitarian response in developing countries by supporting the appropriate, timely and effective response of international and Canadian humanitarian organizations.
