The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Criminal Investigations Section has laid 10 charges against a Calgary woman purporting to be Yi Min Weng, 28, following information received from U.S. Consular officials in Calgary earlier this year. She was arrested March 3, 2015 in Calgary. Weng is facing nine charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) for misrepresentation, and using documents; and one charge under the Criminal Code for fraud.
Weng is accused of making multiple immigration applications under different names: a visa application in 2007; a claim for refugee protection in 2007; and an application for permanent residency in 2010. Weng was not successful with the refugee protection claim; however she was successful in obtaining permanent residency through spousal sponsorship. The investigation is ongoing.
Weng has been remanded into custody and is expected to appear again in Calgary Provincial Court on March 6, 2015.
