Federal contribution to site redevelopment recognized
March 28, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta – Infrastructure Canada
Joan Crockatt, Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre, along with WinSport President and CEO Barry Heck, toured the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport Canada Olympic Park today. The visit focused on showcasing the enhanced training, recreational and event hosting capacities of this state-of-the-art sport training venue. The almost $204 million site redevelopment project began in 2006 and is now fully completed and operational.
The first phase of the project saw the construction of three hockey rinks. These have since been home to minor and recreational hockey, ringette, sledge hockey, figure skating, public skating and other programs. The second phase included an international arena with seating for 3,000 spectators, a five-storey office tower and an outdoor celebration plaza.
The final phase created WinSport's Performance Training Centre, a 2,787-square-metre fitness, training and testing facility, the first of its kind in Canada, which serves the needs of both Canada's national winter athletes and goal-oriented amateur athletes. In partnership with the Canadian Sport Institute, the facility also offers a biomechanics lab, a strength and power lab, an exercise physiology lab, full nutritional service capabilities and access to the WinSport Medicine Clinic.
The Park provides Canada's top winter Olympic athletes, as well as the residents of Calgary and the surrounding area, with countless opportunities to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It will allow Calgary to continue to attract regional, provincial, and national tournaments and special events, which will contribute to the City's economic prosperity.
