The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced Canada’s ratification of the Convention on Cluster Munitions as well as $2.4 million in support of demining efforts, assistance to victims of explosive remnants of war and mines, and risk education. The Government of Canada will contribute:
- $1 million to The HALO Trust, to clear mines left behind from the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan during the 1980s in the Mohammad Agha District;
- $850,000 to Mines Advisory Group, to support the removal of landmines in the Mannar District of Sri Lanka; and
- $550,000 to the United Nations Mine Action Service, to expand Colombia’s ability to demine and return cleared property to its communities.
“Canada is taking action to rid the world of cluster munitions because of the devastating impact they have on civilians. We will continue to support a wide range of activities in this regard, and I am pleased to announce additional support for mine action projects. With today’s announcement, Canada is saving lives.”
