Canadian Armed Forces begin policing mission in the Sinai Peninsula

OTTAWA – Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Military Police contingent officially took over providing police services for the next four years for the personnel living in the Multinational Force and Observers camps in the Sinai Peninsula today.

Earlier this month, 37 Military Police and support personnel joined the 31 CAF personnel already deployed as part of Operation CALUMET, Canada’s current contribution to the multinational force. These Military Police will conduct police and security duties in the North and South camps of the multinational peacekeeping force.

The Force and Observers Military Police Unit is the multinational force’s policing effort and provides police services to the 1,700 multinational military and civilian personnel participating in the mission, as well as to the approximately 500 Egyptian and other nationals working within its camps.
Canadian Armed Forces Military Police will perform traffic control duties and conduct patrols, investigations, inspections, and searches. They will also be responsible for crime prevention programs and general security within the North and South camps.

The Multinational Force and Observers is an independent international organization with peacekeeping responsibilities in the Sinai. It was established by the United States, along with Egypt and Israel, in 1981, and is responsible for supervising implementation of Annex I (the "Security Annex") of the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli Treaty of Peace.
The Canadian Armed Forces have contributed to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) continuously since 1985. The augmentation of Canada’s contribution to the MFO in 2015 demonstrates Canada’s continued commitment to working with its partners and allies in support of peace and security efforts in the Middle East.
