March 11, 2015 - Lévis, Québec
The Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and Member of Parliament for Lévis, Bellechasse et des Etchemins, announced today that the Government of Canada has awarded a $13.6 million contract to Chantier Davie Canada Inc. for Vessel Life Extension and refit work for the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Earl Grey.
The CCGS Earl Grey celebrated its 30th year of service earlier this year, on February 8. She has provided valuable service to Canadians, assisting in firefighting on the Kitano in Halifax Harbour in 2001, and also helping to recover the wreckage of Swissair flight 111 off Peggy’s Cove in 1998.
Renewing the Canadian Coast Guard Fleet is part of the Government of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy, which aims to support a vibrant Canadian shipbuilding industry by ensuring shipyards across the country can compete and benefit from Canada’s significant ongoing maintenance requirements while ensuring the best value for Canadian taxpayers.
“Our Government is committed to creating jobs and opportunities for Canadians. I am extremely proud to announce a third contract for Chantier Davie in less than a year that will create jobs and growth. Once again, the Davie Shipyard has shown it has the competence, talent and skills to compete successfully on federal contracts, and I am sure more opportunities will arise.”
