March 6, 2015 - Campbell River, British Columbia
On behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of State, Chief Government Whip, and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, announced today an investment of approximately $1.5 million to support Canadian Coast Guards assets that contribute to maritime safety: the Search and Rescue Station in Campbell River and eight lighthouses on Vancouver Island and B.C. Central Coast.
Today’s announcement will support the important work of our dedicated members of the Canadian Coast Guard in protecting mariners and ensuring the safety of Canadian waters. The funding will go towards lighthouses building renovations and exterior repairs such as engine room replacement, walkway and road improvements. Additional funding will also be provided to improve the shore-side operation space at the Campbell River Search and Rescue station.
Since 2006, the Government of Canada has provided an unprecedented level of funding to support investments in public infrastructure across the country. Last fall, Prime Minister Harper announced an additional investment of $5.8 billion over the next two years to build and renew infrastructure across the country to support Canadian heritage, First Nations education, defence, borders, research, small craft harbours, transportation and search and rescue. As part of this funding, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard will receive a total of approximately $551 million.
“The Government of Canada continues to make maritime safety a priority across Canada, including here in British Columbia. We also recognize the connection between economic growth and an efficient infrastructure Canadians can rely on. That’s why our Government will continue to encourage job creation, link communities and ensure safe and accessible waterways for mariners.”
The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans
“Our Government is pleased to make improvements to these important components of our local infrastructure to deliver quality services to Canadians in coastal regions. Through these investments, we are continuing to support local economic growth, while investing in federal infrastructure that keeps Canadians safe and secure.”
