March 27, 2015 - Mississauga, Ontario - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met with Philip Hammond, the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, to discuss issues of national security and the current threat posed by extremist jihadism.
As both countries are at the forefront of the coalition against the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the discussion focused on the threat posed by this terrorist organization and highlighted the importance of a comprehensive approach to combat extremist militants to keep the citizens of both Canada and the U.K. safe from harm. They reaffirmed their commitment to coordinate programming in support of affected civilians.
Also during their meeting, Minister Nicholson and Foreign Secretary Hammond formally endorsed the third annual review of the Canada-United Kingdom Joint Declaration, which recognizes the bilateral commitment of both countries to promoting domestic and global security, promoting economic growth, trade and innovation, and promoting shared values such as women’s empowerment and freedom of religion or belief.
