March 19, 2015 – Toronto, ON – Transport Canada
Following a roundtable today with the Canadian Trucking Alliance, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, announced that Transport Canada supports two safety technologies—electronic logging devices (ELDs) and electronic stability control systems (ESC)—which have the potential to strengthen safety on Canada’s roads. This is consistent with the Government of Canada’s commitment to align with U.S. vehicle standards. Transport Canada is also working with provinces and territories to develop the business case for introducing ELDs across Canada to be well positioned once the standards are finalized.
Stability control systems are a crash avoidance technology found on new cars and light duty vehicles that have proven safety benefits. They reduce motor vehicle collisions by improving driver control, preventing rollovers, and enhancing directional stability.
ELDs are useful in tracking and improving the accuracy of recorded driving times, which helps drivers remain within regulated allowable driving hours to reduce fatigue. In addition, ELDs also reduce the administrative burden of drivers who need to fill out paper log books, while also reducing the time enforcement officers need to verify compliance with hours of service regulations.
“We are working actively with our stakeholders and provincial partners to support increased safety for Canadians and Canada’s trucking industry through innovative technologies such as electronic logging devices and electronic stability systems.”
