The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Jane M. Fitzpatrick, a lawyer with the Newfoundland and Labrador Legal Aid Commission in St. John's, is appointed a judge of the Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court, Trial Division, to replace Mr. Justice R.P. Whalen (St. John's), who was appointed Chief Justice effective December 11, 2014.
Madam Justice Fitzpatrick received a Bachelor of Laws in 1991 from Dalhousie Law School and was admitted to the Bar of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1992. She had been a lawyer with Newfoundland and Labrador Legal Aid in St. John's since 2008, and with the Newfoundland and with Labrador Human rights Commission from 2007 to 2008.
Madam Justice Fitzpatrick also previously practised with the NL Legal Aid Commission in St. John's from 1999 to 2007 and in Labrador from 1996 to 1999. She was with the Crown Attorney's Office in Labrador from 1994 to 1996, and a lawyer with the firm Noonan, Oakley, Orr in St. John's from 1992 to 1994. Her main areas of practice were criminal law, family law, administrative law, human rights law, and civil litigation. She was a member of the Board of Directors of St. Patrick's Mercy Home Foundation from 2007 to 2013.
This appointment is effective immediately.
