Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced support for 42 infrastructure projects in Quebec, including federally-owned small craft harbours and regional airports, as well as other federal assets and supported initiatives. This will generate jobs and economic growth across the province.
The support being provided for 34 small craft harbours will help refurbish and repair these facilities while improving safety and working conditions for commercial fishermen in Quebec. It will also generate construction jobs.
The support being provided to three federally-owned and operated regional airports, Schefferville, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon, will help make improvements to these facilities and will create construction jobs, facilitate the flow of goods and services in the province, and provide Quebecers with more efficient transportation to various parts of the country and the world.
Additional support is also being provided to revitalize the following assets in and around QuébecCity: the Lévis Forts National Historic Site, the Citadelle of Québec and the Soils and Crop Research and Development Centre. Support is also being provided for the construction of agricultural facilities at Université Laval’s Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures agronomic station near QuébecCity and for upgrades to building and scientific infrastructure at the Laurentian Forestry Centre in Sainte-Foy. The upgrading of these assets and supported initiatives, and the creation of new facilities, will promote education, agricultural and forestry development and cultural heritage in the province. These initiatives will promote construction jobs, help young Quebecers learn the skills necessary to secure good jobs, help Quebec farmers produce better crops and preserve the province’s natural and cultural heritage for current and future generations.
Today’s announcement is part of the Government’s unprecedented and historic investment in public infrastructure to ensure Canada’s future economic growth for years to come while balancing the federal budget and keeping taxes low. Since 2006, the Government of Canada has provided significant support for both new infrastructure in Quebec and enhancing existing assets, generating thousands of new jobs and improving the well-being of Quebecers and their families. This includes the creation of the New Building Canada Plan, the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in Canada’s history. This infrastructure support will generate benefits for the province and its citizens for years to come.
