Canada is supporting the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) to deploy an emergency health care unit, which will provide much-needed health and medical services, including outpatient care, surgical operations and maternal health services, to thousands affected by the earthquake in Nepal. The emergency health care unit will also have the capacity to offer outreach and mobile care including vaccinations, rehydration, and mother and child care for up to 200 people per day.
The health care unit will focus on mother, newborn and child health and will include an operating capacity to assist with complicated deliveries. It will run 24 hours per day with 20–30 CRC delegates working alongside local staff and volunteers. The unit also has 40 beds for patients requiring observation.
Canada has a long-standing relationship with the CRC, working together to meet the humanitarian needs of crisis-affected populations.
