The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“Canada welcomes the draft national ceasefire agreement that has been reached between the Government of Burma and ethnic armed groups.
“This historic agreement is an important stepping stone toward ending 60 years of civil strife. Canada encourages all parties to continue working together to establish a framework for a subsequent political dialogue with a view to further entrenching peace.
“Canada applauds the determination of all sides to reach this point and will continue to work with our partners to promote freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Burma.”
