Ontario woman wins 2014 Taylor Award
April 17, 2015 - Ottawa, Ontario - Correctional Service Canada
The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is pleased to announce that the 2014 Taylor Award has been awarded to Ms. Carol Finlay.
The Taylor Award was established in November 2001 - the International Year of Volunteers. It is presented annually by CSC and the National Volunteer Association to an outstanding CSC volunteer who has shown exceptional dedication to the Service.
Ms. Finlay is the founder and director of Book Clubs for Inmates (BCFI), a charity that began in 2009 and operates book clubs in CSC institutions. As a result of her hard work, BCFI has now established 17 book clubs in 14 institutions and two community residential facilities, touching thousands of lives every year. In addition to the book club, Ms. Finlay set up a scholarship program for offenders who wish to take university courses while incarcerated. She also helped establish support circles for men and women recently released from a federal institution that assist with basic life skills such as finding employment and housing.
Her persistence, commitment and personal charisma have allowed her to build enduring relationships with CSC staff, volunteers and community members across Canada.
“CSC is deeply indebted to volunteers for their active contribution to the correctional process as they engage community support, which is essential to enhancing public safety.”
