At the seventh Summit of the Americas (April 10 to 11, 2015) in Panama City, Panama, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced several projects aimed at strengthening economic growth across Latin America and the Caribbean:
Title: Promoting Rural Economic Development in the Dry Corridor in Honduras Cost and timeframe: $35 million (2016-2021)
Implementing partners: may include Canadian, international and local organizations
This call for proposals is aimed at increasing the economic opportunities and well-being of small-scale producers and entrepreneurs in the Dry Corridor in Honduras, with a focus on women, youth and marginalized groups in one of the country’s poorest regions.
Title: Building Extractive Sector Governance in Colombia
Cost and timeframe: $18.8 million (2015-2019)
Implementing partner: Agriteam Canada
This project will provide Canadian and international technical assistance to Colombian state entities that manage the natural resources and extractive sectors. It will help make Colombia’s extractive sector more environmentally sustainable and contribute to equitable economic growth and poverty reduction.
Title: Integrated Rural Economic Development for Micro-Regions in Colombia
Cost and timeframe: $15 million (2014-2018)
Implementing partner: International Organization for Migration
This project will support efforts by the Government of Colombia to improve the rural production and competitiveness of some of Colombia’s poorest rural areas, directly benefitting 4,000 small-scale farmers.
Title: Agricultural Training Program and Support of Youth Entrepreneurship in Peru
Cost and timeframe: $12.4 million (2014-2019)
Implementing partner: Solidarité Union Coopération (SUCO)
This project is aimed at improving the conditions and economic opportunities of producers through technical training and support in the creation and consolidation of entrepreneurial initiatives. It will help target communities transition from subsistence farming to a market economy, benefitting approximately 20,000 people.
Title: Responsible Small-Scale Mining in Peru
Cost and timeframe: $8.1 million (2015-2019)
Implementing partner: Artisanal Gold Council
This project is aimed at improving the environmental, health and social practices of at least 8,000 gold miners (both women and men), strengthening the Peruvian government’s support to miners, and developing a responsible, legal and equitable gold market throughout the gold products supply chain.
Title: Contributing to Sustainable Food Production in Cuban Municipalities
Cost and timeframe: $5.2 million (2015-2019)
Implementing partners: may include Canadian, international and local organizations
This project will contribute to the development of sustainable agricultural production and crop diversification in selected municipalities and help to build the capacity of local governments to plan and support the agricultural sector.
Title: Tim Hortons Coffee Partnership in Honduras and Guatemala
Cost and timeframe: $3.6 million (2015-2019)
Implementing partner: Trade Facilitation Office Canada
This project is aimed at improving the lives of smallholder coffee farmers in the Trifinio region (a tri-border area spanning Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras) and other coffee growing regions of Guatemala and Honduras by increasing the productivity of their farms, improving the profitability of coffee production, and expanding exports to international markets.
