Federally-funded crime prevention program reduces violence by addressing family-based risk factors.

Today, the Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of Natural Resources and for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, and Member of Parliament for Kenora, on behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, announced more than $2.4 million in federal funding over five years for the crime prevention project Stop Now and Plan (S.N.A.P.©), which will help up to 320 youth, aged 6 to 17, and their families develop skills and behaviors to help them avoid violence.
S.N.A.P.© is based on the Canadian Stop Now and Plan Program model which provides a framework for effectively teaching children and their parents self-control and problem-solving skills. By learning these skills in an educational environment that focuses on the entire family, participants gain practical skills to help them avoid violent criminal and bullying behaviours and better contribute to their communities.

- FIREFLY will deliver the project, in partnership with the the Keewatin Patricia District School Board, the Kenora Catholic District School Board and the Ontario Provincial Police, to 320 Kenora youth, aged 6 to 17, and their parents who are involved in, or at risk of becoming involved in violent behaviours.
- Evidence-based models supported by the Crime Prevention Action Fund help youth make smart choices through the provision of community-based educational, cultural, sport and vocational opportunities.
- From April 2014 to March 2015, the Government of Canada invested in 98 community-based crime prevention programs through the National Crime Prevention Strategy.
