Training Opportunities will Expand Capacity for Business Owners and Employees

April 9, 2015 – Yellowknife, NT – Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor)

Minister Aglukkaq today announced an investment to support the development of small and medium enterprises in Yellowknife. This investment will see affordable training and professional development opportunities provided for business owners and employees over the next two years.

The training will be provided by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and will focus on financial and human resource management and include a marketing booster module. This training will assist local businesses to improve their competitiveness in the marketplace.

CanNor is partnering with the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce, City of Yellowknife and the Government of the Northwest Territories (NWT) to ensure that Northerners have the skills and training they need to take part in the northern economy.
CanNor's funding ($144,960) will support this initiative over a two year period (2014-15 and 2015-16) in order to maximize the number of participants engaging in this training opportunity.
The Board of Directors of the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce has identified three primary skill shortages among the small business community – financial management, human resource management and marketing. The Business Development Bank of Canada offers courses in these three areas and through this partnership, 90% of the cost for businesses to participate is covered.
