HALIFAX, N.S. – Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Athabaskan departed Halifax today to support Operation CARIBBE, Canada’s contribution to the multinational campaign against illicit trafficking and organized crime in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and its approaches, and the eastern Pacific off the coasts of Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and Ecuador.
The ship will join allied forces in the area of operations later this month. It will be the sixth Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) ship to deploy on Operation CARIBBE in 2015, and the third ship to deploy from Canadian Fleet Atlantic.
HMCS Athabaskan will also participate in the Bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans in Louisiana. The ship and its crew will join the United States and other allies to commemorate the final battle of the War of 1812 during a week-long celebration in New Orleans.
