The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of its first quarter highlights (January to March) from its various operations in Calgary, including airport, commercial, and inland operations. This sampling underscores the CBSA’s commitment to keeping communities safe and ensuring our laws are respected.
Between January and March, CBSA officers in Calgary seized 135 prohibited weapons entering the country in 10 separate incidents. These weapons included blowguns, push daggers, and brass knuckles. In one case on January 26, officers processed a 32-year-old Manitoba man and referred him for further examination. They arrested him after finding two prohibited weapons – a switchblade and a butterfly knife – inside his suitcase. The traveller was released after both knives were confiscated with no terms of release.
On March 4, officers reunited a mother with her child. The step-parent only had consent to leave the country with the child for one month, but was absent for three months. The step-parent was arrested on an outstanding warrant for child abduction and contravening a custody order.
On March 23, 2015, the CBSA obtained a removal order for a fugitive from China who is accused of participating in a fraud scheme worth Can$4 million.
On March 31, a violent criminal was removed from Calgary to his home country after completing a criminal sentence for robbery and parole violations. He is permanently barred from returning to Canada.
