Strengthening economic ties with the Philippines is a priority under the government’s ambitious pro-jobs, pro-export plan
April 28, 2015 - Ottawa, Ontario - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, today met with Adrian Cristobal Jr., the Philippines’ Undersecretary for Industry and Development and Trade. Building on Minister Fast’s recent meeting in Manila with Gregory Domingo, the Philippine’s Secretary of Trade and Industry, Minister Fast and Undersecretary Cristobal discussed the Canada-Philippines bilateral partnership and opportunities to deepen and modernize the relationship.
This meeting took place in the lead up to the state visit by Philippines’ President Benigno Aquino III to Canada in early May. President Aquino’s bilateral visit to Canada will provide an opportunity for both leaders to reaffirm the close relationship between Canada and the Philippines, based on strong people-to-people ties.
Minister Fast will lead a trade mission to Manila and Cebu, the Philippines, from May 24 to 28, 2015; he will be accompanied by Senator Tobias Enverga Jr.
The trade mission to the Philippines will help Canadian companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), take advantage of the opportunities available in one of the most dynamic and fast-growing countries in Asia.
Minister Fast will also participate in the APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade meeting on May 23 and 24 in Boracay, Philippines. As Chair of APEC for 2015, the Philippines shares Canada’s commitment to fostering the participation of SMEs in the global economy.
“Strengthening economic and commercial ties with the Philippines, one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic markets in Asia, is a priority under our government’s ambitious pro-jobs, pro-trade Global Markets Action Plan.
“Our government is committed to opening new markets and creating opportunities for Canadian businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, helping them find success in global markets, creating jobs and economic growth for all Canadians.”
